Patterned

With George it’s impossible to have a real jigsaw, out of a 1,000 piece puzzle I would guess we’d lose 10% and he’d eat another 30%…

So jigsaw apps make a bit more sense. The problem with them is I don’t really want a subscription model for this type of app and most seem to fall into this category. I would happily pay a decent upfront cost, but monthly is too much to ask.

I was really hoping Apple would add one to Apple Arcade and thankfully, they have!

Patterned is a jigsaw style puzzle with a twist. The image is a repeating ’tiled’ patterned. In other words, if you place the same image side by side the pattern repeats in such a way that you do not see the edge.

The image starts out as a pencil drawing and as you place pieces it becomes colourised.

As you place pieces the corresponding sections, not just where you place it, also colourise. Eventually, you fill the screen and complete the puzzle.

The game is extremely relaxing. There is a very pleasant soundtrack and no distractions at all. It’s a pleasure to play.

I have one criticism though, and although it sounds small it is substantial to me as it reduces the calm feeling of the app by adding a degree of frustration. When you place a piece it must be in the centre tile and not around the edges on the repeating tiles. This often, for a brief moment, leaves me annoyed but I would imagine it is easily fixed so fingers crossed for a future update.
